The Greek theatre, whose cavea is one of the largest ever built by the ancient Greeks. It was built in the 5th century B.C. and could seat 16,000. The theater was the focal point of Syracuse's buzzing cultural scene, staging works by Sophocles, Euripides and Aescylus, whose "The Persians", "Prometheus Bound" and "Prometheus Unbound" were premiered here in his presence. The edifice (still used today) was modified by the Romans, who adapted it to their different style of spectacles, including their circus games.
