Killed in Portage Crash Returning from priest's jubilee at Virginia
A trip to Virginia to join in the jubilee celebration of a brother who is a priest proved fatal Monday to a Reedurban couple and the husband's brother.
Killed in the two car crash on US 224 near Ohio 225 in Portage county, at7:25 p.m. Monday were:
Harold E. Stockert, 57, 154 Woodlawn Ave. NW, Reedurban.
Mrs. Ethel Stockert, 44, same address.
George A. Stockert, 52, 671 S. Haines St. Alliance.
Listed satisfactory in Robinson Memorial hospital in Ravenna today is Mrs. Mary Jaybe Stockert, wife of George. The Driver of the second car involved in the accident, Preston J.Nicholson, 22, of 545 S. Mahoning Ave. Alliance, is in "guarded"condit ion in the same hospital.
THE OHIO Highway Patrol at Ravenna reported today that the accident was still under investigation and that details were not available due to difficulty in questioning survivors.
A member of the Stockert family said the two brothers and their wives were enroute home from a trip to Virginia Beach, where a third brother, the Rev. Donfred Stockert, observed his 25th jubilee as a priest on Sunday.
The mother of the three brothers, Mrs. Cena Stockert of Redurban, was reported to have gone to Virginia Beach with the party, but stayed behind to return with Fr. Stockert. The priest was scheduled to return home to Redurban this Sunday to celebra te a jubilee mass in St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church.
BOTH STOCKERT brothers were dead on arrival at the Ravenna hospital, according to hospital attendants, Mrs. Stockert died at 7:30 a.m. today.
Harold Stockert was a supervisor for the engineering department at Ohio Bell Telephone Co. for 25 years. He was a life resident of the area and a member of St. Joan of Arc church and its choir.
George Stockert, an Alliance resident for 28 years, was a field engineerfor the Ohio Edison Co. He was active in conservation work both local and on a statewide basis and was a first aid instructor for both Ohio Edison and the Alliance Red Cros s chapter. He was a member of Regina Coeli Catholic church in Alliance and the Dr. Roach Outdoor league.
THE BROTHERS are survived by their mother; three sisters, Mrs. Aloysius Kremple of Mansfield and Mrs. Ernest Echstine of Wooster; and four brothers, Fr. Stockert, Walter of Strasburg, Paul of Lorain and Thomas of Detroit.
Harold Stockert is also survived by two daughters Mrs. David Lash of Canton and Miss Paula Jean Stockert at home. His first wife Mrs. Margaret Siegfried Stockert died in 1964.
George Stockert is survived by three sons in addition to his wife. They are Sean and Edward both at home and Joel of Louisville. There are two grandchildren.
Mrs. Ethel Stockert was employed as secretary for Dr. John Andrea of Canton and prior to that was a practical nurse at Canton's Aultman hospital for seven years. She was born in Massillon and had resided in Perry township for four years. She wa s a graduate of Timken Mercy hospital's school of practical nursing and was a member of St. Joan of Arc church.
Her first husband, Donald E. Levers, died in 1961. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Edward Jentes of Hew Hampshire, and the Misses Karen Ann and Diane Marie Levers both at home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kraft of Massillon; two siste rs, Mrs. Donald Bowers of Alliance and Mrs. William Kemp of Bay Village; and a brother, Leonard Kraft of Massillon.
Funeral arrangements for Harold and Ethel Stockert are being made at Wackerly funeral home in Canton and for George Stockert at Walson-Schrader funeral home in Alliance.
The funeral of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Stockert of 154 Woodlawn ave. NW, Reedurban, who died as the result of a traffic crash near Ravenna Monday evening, will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Joan of Arc Catholic church, Reedurban.
The body of Harold Stockert, 57, will be interred in Calvary cemetery, Reedurban and the body of his wife, Mrs. Ethel Levers Stockert, will be interred in Brookfield cemetery here.
Friends may call at the Wackerly funeral home in Canton today until 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral of George A. Stockert of Alliance, a brother, who was killed in the same accident, was today in Alliance. Interment was made in Calvary cemetery.
