Norman's father, John Floom, was born in 1850 in Ohio. At the time of the 1880 census, John was single and a saloon keeper living with siblings and his parents on the family farm in Stark County, Ohio. The 1880 household was headed by C. Floom, John's father, who was born in 1824 in Baden, a grand duchy (which became part of southwestern Germany in 1918). John's mother was Margaret Floom, born in 1832 in Ohio of German parents. Also in the household were John's brothers William (age 23), Frank (age 17), Edward (age 11), and sister Red (age 14). John married Louisa Bechler on March 23, 1882. At the time of the 1880 census, Louisa (born 1856) was a serving girl. She lived in Perry, Stark County, Ohio with her widowed mother and siblings. Mother, Rosina, was born in 1832 in Ohio. Rosina's father was born in Germany and mother in Ireland. Louisa's siblings living at home were brothers Charles (age 20), Edward (age 14), Eugene (age 8), and sisters Mina (age 17) and Ida (age 11). Louisa's father was German-born.
